On The Radio - March 2009

Gerard Was Special Guest On Al Rantel Radio Show Interviewed By "Sports Princess", John Phillips

Gerard Christian Zacher is an up-&-coming actor in Hollywood. He is originally from Chicago, IL where he started putting on shows as "producer", "director", & "actor" in his backyard at the age of 5. He spent the rest of his years in his hometown in both stage & musical theater, student & project films, & as an extra & stand-in in a variety of films & TV shows filmed in the Chicago areas.
A successful, but brief stint in the Army led him indirectly to Las Vegas where he put together his own theatre troupe as well as landing a weekly comedy radio show. Again, he was producer, director, writer, & performer. Gerard also organized & performed in public & charity events. In addition, he was one of the public's favorite 4 characters in the Freakling Bros. widely successful Haunted House, "The Dungeon". He also enjoyed success as a free-lance artist/cartoonist. With all this going on simultaneously, he was often featured in local Las Vegas magazines & newspapers. However, as his Las Vegas careers began to peak, his father suffered a severe stroke & Gerard, loyal to his family & friends, gave it all up to spend the next year back in Chicago helping his father recover.
His father well, Gerard was free to once again resume his own life and moved to LA, where he had always wanted to settle. He worked for Disneyland, geared up to be the first walk-around Peter Pan in years until the park made the decision to not have a Pan at that time, after all. Instead, he entertained the Disney masses in other areas including The Jungle Cruise.
He entertains Hollywood taking photos with tourists on the side for his own personal fun as various film character look-alikes, whi ch led to his discovering he had a love and a knack for special effects make-up. His most poular character is, of course, Hollywood Blvd Freddy, But he is also known and loved as the most famous version of Gary Oldman's Dracula, Beetlejuice (a role which he shares with Jessy Andrews), the Tin Man, Luke Skywalker, The ORIGINAL Shrek, Snoopy, Peter Pan (a character with which he has been connected with all his life), and is now cast as Frank "N' Furter in a soon-to-be-performed Hollywood Blvd show of "The Rocky Horror Show".
His stint as Hollywood Blvd Freddy led to his hosting haunted tours of LA AS the character along with his pal Yogi (Hollywood Blvd Michael Myers). Recently, he's been on TV, is about to begin filming his first films as leading man, & is working on a variety of novels, stage & screenplays. You'll be seeing a LOT of him in plays, TV shows, films, on book shelves, & a variety of other media VERY soon!

THE SCARACTER INTERVIEW:

Q: What Made You Decide To Bring Dracula, Freddy, And Beetlejuice Out Onto And What Inspired You To Become A Part Of The Hollywood Blvd Character Scene In The First Place?

GCZ: I Had Just Come Back To LA From Orange County After Years With Disneyland. Disneyland Was Great Fun. TOO Much Fun In A Way, And It Was Taking Me Away From My A Lot Of The Goals I Came Out Here To Pursue. Yet I Still Needed To Entertain The Masses And Keep My Performer Juices Going. I Had Seen The Characters On Hollywood Blvd Before, And Was Intrigued, But This Time I Took Much More Of A Notice. It Was A Perfect Thing For Me To Do. It Would Fit The Need For Fun And Entertaining Others In Me, It Would Give Me An Excuse To Be, TECHNICALLY, A Working Actor On A Very Regular, Near-Daily Basis, And I Could Showcase Myself In Ways That Would Potentially Attract Entertainment Industry Attention.

As For Why Dracula, Freddy, And Beetlejuice, All I Saw On The Blvd Were Mostly Spandex Superheroes And Old Hollywood Personalities. There Was Elmo, And An Elaborate, Winged Demon Creation, Too. He Was Really Cool. He Wasn't Any Particular Character...Something Unique. But I Didn't See Any Other Kind Of MOVIE Characters Out There. No Scary Movie Guys Like Freddy, Jason, Or Other Icons. I Thought The Scene Needed More Variety. And I Had Done That Version Of Dracula Before For Halloween Long Ago. I LOVED How Majestic, Regal, Elaborate, And Theatrical It Was. I Wanted To Bring That Sort Of High Standard To The Blvd. I Thought It Would Be A Great Costume To Debut With. And I Was Right. I Got More Compliments Than I Could Count, And I Deeply Appreciated Them All.
Freddy Had Always Been A Favorite Horror Character Of Mine Because He Was Both Fun And Scary. I Already Had A Haunted House Background From Working One Of The Most Popular Ones In Las Vegas. I Was One Of The Four Most Hifghly Featured Characters There, Had Used Special FX Makeup Very Effectively, And I Had A Blast. Another Thing I Always Liked About Freddy Is That He Is So Animated. I LOVED Doing Dracula, And The Costume, But After A Very Long Time In The Costume, It Was Very Restrictive, And I Always Had To Be Regal...Poised. After Enough Of That, I Just Needed To Be Able To Move Around And Expend My Pent-Up Energy. I Couldn't Run Around In The Dracula Costume Sneaking Up On People, Scaring Them, Etc. That Just Wasn't The Character, And I Could Barely WALK In That Costume Much Less Run! LOL! So, After I Saw The First Preview For "Freddy Vs. Jason", It Brought Back All My Teenage Excitement From The "Nightmare" Films Hype. I HAD To Do The Character. I Could Do So Much In That Costume That I Couldn't Do As Dracula. The Makeup Was Even MORE Of A Challenge That Appealed To Me. There WAS No FreddyOn The Blvd, So He Was Free To Do, And I Jumped On It Right Away After That Preview. I Did Really Well. Then, Months Later, When The Movie Came Out, The Flood Gates Were Open. Kids Who Didn't Know Who Freddy Was Now Knew All About Him, And I Got SWAMPED With Attention. I LOVED It!  So Much So, That I've Been Doing It Ever Since!

Q: You Have Many Characters Now. Freddy Is Your Favorite, It Seems?

GCZ: All My Characters Do Well, And I Like Them All Equally. But Freddy Is The PUBLIC'S Favorite And My Fellow Characters' Favorite Of My Characters. I'm Known For Doing A Lot Of Dfferent Characters And Everyone Gets A Kick Out Of All Of Them. But I've Become MOST Known For Doing Freddy - Especially Since A Lot Of Other Modern Horror Icons Have Popped Up Out There!

Q: You Choose A Lot Of Characters That Require Intense Special Effects Makeup Work When You Could Just Wear A Mask. Why Is That?

GCZ: Well, For One Thing, To Me, Masks Can Get Very Uncomfortable. Not That I Don't Believe In Suffering For Your Art, Because I Definately DO To SOME Degree. But I Like The Feeling Of My Face Being Freer And Able To Move And Breathe. Plus, I Find Makeup To Be Much More Effective Than Masks And They Have A Much More, Realistic Look To Them. Most Of The Other Horror Characters I Work With Are In A Different Situation Than Me. Their Actual CHARACTERS Wear Masks IN The Films They Come From - Such As Jason, Michael Myers, Scream, Etc. Freddy Does Not, And So Should Not BE A Mask. That, To Me, Would Be Cheating And It Would It Give Off A Very Fake Look. Masks Are For Collecting And Trick-Or-Treating And Masquerade Parties, Etc. NOT To Be Worn If You Are Going To REPRESENT The Character For Thousands Of People Everyday If Your Character Doesn't Wear A Mask.
I Don't Believe In Cheating And Taking The Easy Way Out. I Believe In Putting Work And Effort And Skill And Time Into What You Do. Especially If You Are Entertaining People And You Are Going To Be In Their Photo Albums Or On Their Mantels, Etc. I Want Their Photos To Really Look Like They Are Actually WITH That Character. Why Would They Want It Otherwise? I Sure Wouldn't Want To Be In Photo With A Character Who Was So VERY Obviously Fake. I Am A FAN Of My Characters And The Film Actors Who Play Them And I Want To RESPECT Them By At LEAST Doing Their Characters JUSTICE. If Not, I Would Feel I Was INSULTING Them Instead Of Paying Homage To Them. That Wouldn't Be Right. Besides, I Don't Believe In Doing Anything Half-Assed.
Yes, I Know I COULD Make My Makeup Jobs Even MORE Effective And Go ALL Out. However, I Do This At LEAST A Few Times A Week. There Is Comfort To Consider As Well. I Spend LONG Hours Out There With The People And I've GOT To Keep It As Comfortable As Possible And Yet Look Good And Authentic At The Same Time. ( And I DO Still Go Pretty All Out!) That Requires A LITTLE Bit Of A Compromise. I've Got To Sacrifice A LITTLE Effectiveness In Order To Stay Comfortable. I've Also Got To Keep It As Easy To Put On And Take Off As Possible. If You Do Something For Years And Your Process Is TOO Time-Consuming And Complex, You're Not Going To WANT To Do It Anymore After Awhile. You Will Eventually Lose The Motivation. And I NEVER Want To Get To That Point. My Makeup IS Pretty Complex As It Is. It Takes Me About A Couple Of Hours. Yet I've Gotten To Where I Know It So Well, It Doesn't FEEL Too Complex For Me. As For Taking It Off, It Comes Off A LOT More Easily Than It Is Put On!! It Is JUST UN-Complex Enough To Have Been Able To Handle For Me For All These Years. And It Is, According To Countless People, Still VERY Effective! So, I Think I've Found That Perfect Balance I Need With It.

Q: Are People Surprised To See What You Really Look Like Under All That Scary Makeup?

GCZ: [LOL!] ALL THE TIME!!

Q: It Is Understood That You Were The Main Inspiration For This "Scaracter" Boom - Whether Directly Or Indirectly. Do You Feel Proud Of That?

GCZ: Of Course, I Do! My Goal Has Always Been To Bring More Diversity To The Blvd, And That Has Definately Happened. It Makes Me Very Happy To Look At All These Horror Icons Now And That I Helped Play A Part In That.

Q: Ironically, You Guys - Ironically, As You Are The SCARY Characters - Seem To Be Able To Work Together In Large Groups As One Big Team. And You Are The Only Ones To So Far Be Able To Do That And Keep It Up. How Do You Get Along So Well? And What Was It That Gave All The Idea To Do That When Most Of All The Other Characters Work Alone Or Only In Pairs At Most?

GCZ: Well, Both Of Those Questions Can Be Explained With The Same Answer. We KNOW It Gives A Thrill To The Public And Fans Of These Films To See All (Or At Least A Lot) Of Their Favorite Scary Guys TOGETHER. We Know That Because We Can Put Ourselves In Their Shoes. We Are All Fans Of These Different Movies And Their Star Characters. If WE Saw These Icons Together, We Would DEFINATELY Want A Photo With Them! And It Gives US Even MORE Of A Thrill To Be Able To GIVE That Thrill To The Public. I Think It Is That Thrill We Get That Binds Us Together And Helps Us Get Along. We DO Get Into Occasional Disagreements Now And Then, But They Never Last And We Just Have Too Much Fun Working Together Knowing How Much Fun We Are Giving The People.

Q: And Now You Want To Do More As Your Characters With This Group?

GCZ: Yes! For A Long Time, I've Wanted To Take This Character Thing BEYOND Just The Blvd. There Is So Much Potential For This. There's A LOT We Can Do! I Came Up With The Idea Of Starting A "Scare Business" Inspired By The Old "Candid Camera" Shows. I'll Explain More About That When It Takes Off. Also, There Are A Small Handful Of Character Performers Who Give The Whole Of Us A Bad Name. I Don't Believe In Pestering The Public To Take Photos And Tip Us. I NEVER Do That. I Let My Characters / Costumes Speak For Themselves. I Let THEM Come To Me Of Their Own Free Will And Choice.  I Believe In Showmanship And Being Professional And Getting By On My Talents - NOT On Any Skill Of Bothering People. That ISN'T Real Talent. There Are Also Others Who Treat The Whole Thing As A Quick Way To Make A Buck. Not Me And Not The Rest Of My "Posse"! I See It As An ART And Feel It Should Be Treated Just That Way. It Is NOT A Quick Way To Make A Buck Either, Anyway. It Takes A Lot Of Work. You Have To Be Up And On Your Feet Most Of The Day And / Or Night And Suffer Some Discomfort From Your Costumes. You Have To Be Ready To Pose With Possibly Hundreds Or More People A Day. And, If You Are A TRUE Performer, You've Got To Stay In Character All Day. Also, You've Got To Learn The Fine Line BETWEEN Being Your Character And Yet Being "Public-Friendly" At The Same Time. NONE Of That Is Any Easy Task, Believe Me! That Is Why We DO Deserve A Tip - Those Of Us Who Don't Pester People, Anyway...Those Of Us Who Are NOT Just "Beggars-In-Costumes". There Is A BIG Difference And There Are BOTH Types Out There, And The "Beggars-In-Costumes" Make Us Look Bad A Lot. I Want To Show Us To The Public In A BETTER Light. Give Us A BETTER Reputation. Doing Public Events And Charity Events And Such Will Show Everyone That There ARE A Lot Of Us Who Are Professional, That We Want To Be GOOD Members Of The Community And To Give Something Back...Not Just TAKE, As The Bad Reputation We Sometimes Get From That Wrong Sort Out There - Those "Beggars-In-Costumes" That Behave And Conduct Themselves Poorly Would Have Most People Believe.
I Also Thought It Would Be Great Fun To Be Able To Entertain The Masses Not Just In One Particular, Limited, Geographical Area, But All Over The World, If Possible! Those Are All My Main Reasons For Wanting To Take Us Beyond The Blvd. And We All Argree To That.
